About the Clinic and Doctors

The clinic's history, how treatment is organized, and the composition of our dental team.

What principles guide care at Gangbuk Baeksang Dental Clinic (강북백상치과)?

To be a clinic that patients can trust, we keep the following six principles.
1. We recommend only the treatment that is needed. We review your X-rays and CT results with you and explain which treatment is needed now and which areas can simply be monitored.
2. We explain costs before treatment. After diagnosis we explain the treatment plan and costs, and non-reimbursed fees (비급여) can also be checked on the ‘Non-reimbursed Fees’ (비급여 안내) page of our website.
3. We explain the options and their limits together. Even for the same condition there may be several approaches, so we explain the advantages, disadvantages and expected duration of each so that you can decide after you understand them.
4. We take responsibility after treatment. We warrant implant fixtures for 10 years, general prosthetics for 3 years and resin fillings for 2 years, and our in-house dental laboratory responds quickly to any needed adjustments.
5. Specialists decide together. Specialists in integrative dentistry, prosthodontics and conservative dentistry collaborate and look after you together from diagnosis to treatment.
6. We protect natural teeth whenever possible. Before extraction, we first check whether the tooth can be saved, for example with root canal treatment.

Since when has Gangbuk Baeksang Dental Clinic (강북백상치과의원) been in practice?

We have been treating patients since 1986, for more than 40 years, at the same location at the Gwangsan intersection in Suyu-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul.

How is the dental team organized?

Four directors make up the team, who are specialists in integrative dentistry, prosthodontics and conservative dentistry. You can find each director's education, license and specialist certificate numbers, and career history on the doctors' page of our website.

How does collaboration between specialties work?

Specialists from each department examine the patient's condition together and collaborate from diagnosis through treatment. When several fields are needed together, such as implants, prosthetics and root canal treatment, the opinion of each specialty is taken into account.

Do you have an in-house dental laboratory?

Yes, we operate an in-house dental laboratory. Prosthetics are made to reflect each patient's condition and needs, and we respond quickly when adjustments are needed.

What kind of implant operating room and diagnostic equipment do you have?

We have a dedicated implant operating room and maintain thorough sterilization and disinfection. We plan treatment for each patient using equipment such as cone-beam CT and 3D printers.

What treatments do you provide?

We provide general dentistry, including implants, aesthetic prosthetics, cavity treatment, root canal treatment, orthodontics, jaw joint treatment, wisdom tooth extraction, gum treatment and scaling.

Information by Treatment

Common questions before and after treatment, organized by field. This is general information and may differ depending on each person's condition.

Dental Implants

How much experience do you have with implants?

Based on experience with more than 45,000 implant cases, we treat a wide range of cases, including bone grafts, sinus implants, full-arch implants and revision implant surgery.

Which implant products do you use?

We use Dentium and Osstem implants. After a consultation, we will advise you on the product that suits your jawbone condition and treatment plan.

What are the steps of implant treatment, and how long does it take?

The process goes in this order: diagnosis and planning → extraction and bone graft if needed → implant placement → a healing period in which the implant fuses with the bone (osseointegration) → placement of the prosthesis. It usually takes several months, and it can take longer if a bone graft is needed. We will explain the exact duration after a detailed diagnosis such as a CT scan.

Can an implant be placed right after extraction?

If there is no infection, enough bone remains, and a safe distance from the nerve is secured, placement on the day of extraction can be considered. If these conditions are not met, placing the implant after the bone has healed gives a more stable result, so we decide whether it is possible after an examination.

Is a bone graft always necessary?

It is not needed in every case; it is decided based on the amount and shape of the bone where the implant will be placed. Even when an implant is placed right after extraction, a bone graft may be done together to fill the empty space, so please ask whether it is needed after a CT diagnosis.

If I don't have enough bone, is an implant impossible?

Not having enough bone does not immediately mean an implant is impossible. There are ways to build up the bone, such as sinus lift surgery, and after checking the amount of remaining bone and your general health with CT, we will explain the options available to you.

Is implant surgery very painful?

The surgery is done under anesthesia, so pain during the procedure is controlled. After surgery, discomfort is usually greatest from the day of surgery to two days afterward and then gradually decreases. If pain that was improving gets worse again, or if you have pus or a fever, please contact us right away.

What is peri-implantitis?

It is an inflammation of the gums and bone around an implant. In the early stage it is managed with non-surgical treatment, and if it progresses, surgical treatment is considered. Regular check-ups, careful tooth brushing, not smoking and blood sugar control are the basis of prevention.

What should I do if an implant crown comes off or a screw becomes loose?

The problem is often in the prosthetic part, and it can sometimes be solved by re-fixing or replacing it. Please keep the crown that came off safely and bring it with you, and if the same thing happens repeatedly, we will also check your bite force and other possible causes.

In what cases is implant revision surgery needed?

It is considered, for example, when the implant has not fused with the bone or when much bone has been lost to infection. The steps are removal of the existing implant, bone recovery and re-placement, so it may take longer than the first time.

How is a full-arch implant different from an implant denture?

A full-arch implant uses more implants to make a fixed restoration, while an implant denture attaches a removable denture to a smaller number of implants. The suitable option depends on your jawbone condition, ease of care and bite force, so it is difficult to compare them by cost alone.

Wisdom Teeth and Extraction

Do wisdom teeth always have to be removed?

Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. We recommend extraction if they repeatedly cause cavities or gum infection or affect the neighboring tooth, and we may simply monitor them if they are well positioned and well cared for. We will advise you after checking with an X-ray.

Can impacted wisdom teeth also be removed?

Yes, we also treat impacted wisdom teeth that are buried in the gum or lying sideways. Since some are close to the nerve, we use cone-beam CT to check the position of the nerve canal and the shape of the roots before planning the extraction.

How long do pain and swelling last after wisdom tooth extraction?

Pain usually eases from day 2~3, and swelling goes down over about 1 week. Extraction of an impacted tooth may take a little longer. If the pain does not ease, continues or gets worse, or if there is an unusual taste or smell from the extraction site, you need to be examined.

What precautions should I take after extraction?

For the first day, do not rinse your mouth hard or use a straw. If the blood clot that forms over the wound comes off, pain can occur. After the anesthesia wears off, start with lukewarm, soft food, and it is best to avoid smoking, alcohol, strenuous exercise and saunas for a few days. If possible, chew on the opposite side.

What should I do if bleeding continues after extraction?

Place clean gauze over the wound and bite down gently for about 2 hours. A little blood mixed into saliva is normal, but if bright red blood keeps coming after 24 hours, please contact the clinic.

Can my lip or chin feel numb after wisdom tooth removal?

When the tooth is very close to the nerve, sensation may become dull or numb temporarily, and in most cases it recovers over time. Recovery is occasionally slow, so to reduce this risk we check the nerve position with CT before extraction.

Root Canal Treatment and Saving Natural Teeth

How many visits does root canal treatment take?

It depends on the condition of the tooth, the number of root canals and the degree of infection, and it is usually done over several visits. We will tell you the approximate number of visits after diagnosis.

Is a crown always needed after root canal treatment?

A tooth that has had root canal treatment becomes weaker and breaks more easily, so we recommend protecting it with a crown, especially for molars. It may differ depending on the position of the tooth and how much tooth structure remains.

What should I do if a tooth that had root canal treatment hurts again?

Infection may have remained or newly developed around the previously treated area, so an accurate diagnosis comes first. We check whether the natural tooth can be saved with retreatment of the root canal, and if that is difficult, we will explain other options.

Why are my teeth sensitive to cold?

There are various causes, such as receding gums that expose the root, worn or cracked teeth, or cavities. Treatment differs depending on the cause, so the first step is a check-up to find the cause, and leaving it untreated for a long time may allow it to progress.

Cavities and Prosthetics

How is a resin filling different from an inlay?

A resin filling is placed directly in the mouth to fill the cavity, while an inlay is a restoration made from an impression and then bonded to the tooth. For a large cavity, an inlay may be more stable, so the choice depends on its size and location.

What materials are available for crowns?

There are zirconia, ceramic, metal and others, and the suitable material differs depending on the location, bite force and aesthetics. We will advise you according to your condition at the visit.

Which is better, a bridge or an implant?

A bridge shapes the teeth on both sides to use as supports, while an implant does not touch the neighboring teeth. It depends on the condition of the jawbone and neighboring teeth, so a comparison consultation is needed.

Are dentures uncomfortable at first?

An adjustment period may be needed at first, and uncomfortable areas are improved by adjustment. Depending on your jawbone condition, supporting the denture more securely with implants can also be considered.

Gums, Scaling and Regular Check-ups

How often should I get scaling, and is it covered by insurance?

We usually recommend scaling once every 6 months to 1 year, and for people aged 19 and older, national health insurance covers it once a year (the program may change). More frequent scaling may be needed depending on your gum condition.

My teeth feel sensitive or look more spaced out after scaling. Is that okay?

Teeth may feel sensitive temporarily as tartar is removed, and this usually eases within a few days. The teeth have not actually spread apart; the spaces that had been hidden by tartar have become visible. If the sensitivity continues, please have it checked.

How is gum treatment different from scaling?

Scaling is the basic procedure of removing tartar above the gum line, while gum treatment cleans out deep tartar and infection below the gums. Depending on how advanced it is, it may be done over several visits.

Do I need regular check-ups even if I have no symptoms?

Cavities and gum disease often cause almost no pain in the early stage, so we usually recommend a check-up every 6 months to 1 year. Areas that cannot be seen with the eye, such as between the teeth and the bone, are checked with X-rays.

Jaw Joint and Orthodontics

What are the symptoms of jaw joint disorder, and how is it treated?

Symptoms include noise or pain when opening the mouth, difficulty opening wide, or a stiff jaw, and headaches or neck and shoulder tension may also occur. For treatment, we first consider conservative methods such as an occlusal splint, physical therapy and correction of daily habits.

What are the steps of orthodontic treatment?

The usual order is detailed examination and diagnosis → explanation of the treatment plan → placement of appliances → regular adjustments → retainers. You can decide on the method, duration and cost after hearing a thorough explanation following diagnosis.

Sleep Dentistry (Conscious Sedation)

What is sleep dentistry (conscious sedation)?

Unlike general anesthesia, it is a method that reduces tension and fear about treatment while you remain conscious. Whether it can be done is decided after checking your health condition at a prior consultation.

When is conscious sedation helpful?

It can help reduce the burden if you are very afraid of dental treatment, or for treatment that takes a long time, such as removing several impacted wisdom teeth. The sedation itself is not covered by national health insurance (non-reimbursed).

Costs, Insurance and Warranty

What determines treatment costs, and information on national health insurance, private indemnity insurance and coverage programs.

What determines the cost of an implant?

It depends on the placement surgery, the material and fabrication method of the prosthesis (crown), whether additional procedures such as a bone graft or sinus lift are needed, and whether national health insurance applies. Even for the same implant, the cost may differ depending on the condition of the bone.

When can I know the exact cost?

We can give you the treatment plan and exact cost after a detailed diagnosis such as a CT scan and a consultation. Non-reimbursed items can also be checked on the ‘Non-reimbursed Fees’ (비급여 안내) page at the bottom of our website.

Are implants covered by national health insurance?

For people aged 65 and older, national health insurance implants apply under certain conditions. The eligibility, patient share and number of implants depend on the program and may change, so we will check with you at the consultation. For other ages, and for additional procedures such as bone grafts, they are generally not covered (non-reimbursed).

Is wisdom tooth extraction covered by national health insurance?

When it is for treating a disease, such as pain, cavities or infection, it is mostly covered by national health insurance, and the patient's share varies by the degree of impaction (simple, complex or complete). Hemostatic agents and collagen plugs for preventing dry socket may be non-reimbursed.

Can I claim it through private indemnity insurance?

Whether dental treatment is covered by private indemnity insurance (silson insurance) depends on when you signed up and on your policy terms. Please check directly with your insurance company.

What is the warranty period for implants?

We warrant implant fixtures for 10 years, general prosthetics for 3 years and resin fillings for 2 years. The scope and conditions of application will be explained at your visit.

Are there maintenance costs after an implant is placed?

Implants do not get cavities, but the gums and bone around them can become infected, so regular check-ups and professional cleaning are needed. Screw tightening or prosthetic repair may be needed as well, so please also consider long-term maintenance costs.
